"The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love" Lesbian Movie Review (1995)

This had to be the first lesbian movie I watched, or rather the first one that made me excited about being a lesbian. I always imagined that my high school years would look something like this if, I had the balls (ovaries) to ever ask my crushes out on a date or even utter the appearance of liking them like that.

Randy Dean – first of all what a name, “Randy Dean” it is just the coolest name around and what is even better is that this character Is played by a very young Laurel Holloman (Tina from The L-Word). The character is tough and dirty under the nails. This is just how I was at that age, a tomboy if not an obvious “Lesbian” on site. And her aunt is a mechanic lesbian, and Randy works at her garage. “Just a Normal Typical, lesbo household”

Eva Roy – Played by Nicole Parker, has anyone seen how hot she is lately. Such a cute match these two, and how they met, is just adorable Eva, pulls up to Randy’s aunt’s garage and needs some maintenance on her Land Rover “There is something wrong with my car, I think it is the back tire, can you look at it for me” “I just can’t put air in the tires, cause I think it is going to blow up in my face” (Ps Love that truck) and the goggle eyes ensue.

Frank – is played by Nelson Rodriguez, he is so adorable, picking up after his best friend the lesbian.

The Plot – The movie starts off with Randy Dean making out with her lover/ married lover. This woman seems to be twice her age, and married (why is it that all lesbian movies evolve the lesbian sleeping with a married woman). The plot is one that just seems to flow seamlessly. From the interdiction of the main character Randy Dean, to the meeting of Randi and Eva, and the drama that ensues with the families.

Characters – This is a highshool lesbian film, and the characters are believable. My favorite is Randy’s aunt who reminds me of every old head butch I have ever met, tough and rough around the edges, and constantly trying to steer the young ones in the right direction. Very endearing qualities when you look back at all the women who have steered us in the same direction.

My Favorite part of the movie – Eva’s mom is away for the weekend and the young lovers decide to make it a lovers get away. Then when her mother comes back early and catches them two, they run away to a stinky hotel room, and the fighting starts. Its your fault, its your fault, its your! Then Randy’s Aunt calls Frank, and is commissioned to track randy down. So he calls Eva’s house expecting to Randy to be there, and surprise Eva’s mom answers (this part is freaking hilarious)…… Back and forth back and forth, Eva’s mom, Randy’s Aunt, Frank, and all of Eva’s friends find each other and go on a hunt for the cute little couple. Once they find the hotel room. The movie ends with them drowning out the screams of everyone outside (hilariously screaming) and just hold hands and walk outside just staring into each other’s eyes. CUTE

FIVE STARS – Unbelievable cute movie, the plot is adorable, the characters are fun and it is a love story that I have seen play out in my life time and time again (Not me, well maybe once or twice LOL, but almost every lesbian knows a lesbian who have seen this kind of drama play out)

If you haven’t seen it, go rent it, buy it or even try to find it online (I see it pop up every now and again) YOUR GOING TO LOVE IT.

"Fried Green Tomatoes" Lesbian Movie Review (1991)

4.5 Stars

Lesbian Movie, yes, no, maybso – Lesbianism was a theme in the novel (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café), as the relationship between Idgie and Ruth was accepted by the entire town of Whistle Stop. Although it was not labeled a lesbian relationship, every resident

knew about Idgie and Ruth, accepted it, and loved them for who they were. This relationship was minimized in the film version of "Fried Green Tomatoes" when the events placed Ruth and Buddy Threadgoode together, and Idgie

was much younger than Ruth, suggesting that Ruth loved Idgie because she was Buddy's sister. Many reviews of the film version critiqued what was viewed as a "glossing over" of this theme, although the film received an award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD).

This movie will have you on a roller coaster ride, of laughing crying and taking deep breaths from shock. I watch

ed this film back in 1995, and I was hooked, every time I wanted to share a movie with someone this was the top of my list.

True Story, I was living in New Hampshire, in college, and it was a movie night with some of my friends most of them had never seen the movie before so of course I was off to the Movie rental store to pick it up. On my way there, I have to drive under an over pass for rail road tracks. And as I drove under, “Splat” something hits my windshield. I didn’t take much notice as what seemed to be an apple dangled from my windshield wiper after doing their job of getting most of the gunk off so I could see. I pulled into the movie rental place and went inside and asked them to call the police, because if it was apples they were going to bust someone’s windshield. I rented my movie and then went out to my car to wait for the police. As I get to the car I decide to look and see what it was they threw….. At this point you can probably figure out what was tossed from the over pass…… GREEN TOMATOE….. Freaking weird…. Just the tomatoes factor would have been weird enough, but the fact that it was thrown from rail road tracks makes it even weirder! (If you have seen the movie, you know that one of the main things about whistle stop cafe is that the towns economy is based on the tracks that run there it, not to mention the accident that happens (I won’t give that away)

Another True story – About 3 years later, I am at Boston Pride, and as me and my friends are walking back to one of their houses, we have to go through what I was told is the Italian part of town. And as we are walking I see a woman in the distance and she is looking right at me. She is standing with 2 guys and another woman in the doorway of a restaurant. I think to myself who the heck is this, did I go to school with her, do I know her from back home, and is it someone I met…. The face of the (PS freaking gorgeous woman, tall, confident) was so familiar. As I get closer she is still looking at me, and I am thinking who the hell is this. By this time my pals are on the other side of the street. As I walk past her alone, she says “Hi”, and I say “Hey, how are you.” She says “Good”, and I walk past, quickly crossing the street to join my friends who are all staring at me like my hair was on fire. And at that precise moment I realize, that I had just walked past Mary Stuart Masterson. I kept my cool and acted like I had no clue, my friends on the other hand lost their minds. Needless to say, that was the talk of our group of friends for months.

I now have this movie on VHS, and DVD, and it is one of those movies that I could watch over and over and over again.

My Rating for this movie – Surprise, Surprise!!!! Is 5 stars.

The characters are strong, the references to the past present and future are refreshing, and the actors are impeccable in their delivery. If you haven’t seen this movie you are missing out, you should buy it rent it and watch it over and over and over again.

"Imagine Me & You" Lesbian Movie Review(2005)

5 Stars

“Imagine Me & You” – Five Stars all around. Ok let’s just say that when this movie started I thought I was going to be sorely disappointed with the outcome but at movie end I had tears welling up in my eyes for many different reasons. READ ON.

Relationships:

The Girls – Played by Piper Perabo (Rachel) and Lena Headey (Luce). The relationship begins innocently enough except I knew from the first glance that they were going to be together. Oddly enough it was when Rachel is walking down the aisle to be married that they first exchanged this glance. The florist for the wedding Luce, caught her eye and then a budding friendship ensues, in which both Rachel and her husband become dear friends of Luce. The chemistry is perfect and is believable.

The Married Couple – Played by Piper Perabo (Rachel) and Matthew Goode (Heck) this couple is so adorable together, and I just love the character Heck. He is concerned about their relationship when he realizes that something is going on with his new bride. And he trys to make it better, he is very attentive. He doesn’t even think that it could be another person. When she finally tells him about his lover Luce (well they hadn’t had sex yet, only a short make out session), she also tells him that the relationship with Luce is over. But he takes it upon himself to say that he simply does not want to stand in the way of her happiness, and he wants her to follow her heart. (What do you think she does)

The Parents – Her parents are played by Celia Imrie (Tess) and Anthony Head (Ned), the mother is oddly funny, but in a way that makes you glad that she is on the big screen and not at your house. The father is a timid shy man who is easily manipulated by his overbearing wife. You would think that when Rachel tells her parents, by accident provoked by a scene where Heck leaves Rachel and says he can’t stand in her way. She comes back to explain her situation to her parents and her father says that if his wife had fallen in love as she had, that he loves her mother as Heck loves Rachel and he could never stand in her way. So the race is on for Rachel to get Luce back! With her parents and Luce’s mother in tow, they are off to find her true love.

Film Quality :

This is a movie that has the quality of any movie you might find coming out of Hollywood. The very first scene they take you from the front of a Rolls Royce covered with flowers, and pan up to the church. Then there is a camera angle when you watch Rachel walk down the aisle and then it pans to her view of Luce. You will not be disappointed with the Film Quality, and the flow of the movie.

My Rating :

This movie all around is just perfect, the only issue I might every have with it is the moral dilemma of being a cheater. But that was easily subsided by the fact that they didn’t go all the way and Rachel was always trying to stop herself. And she came clean with Heck. So A Big Old 5 for this movie. This is a definite buy and an absolute rent!!!!

"Just The Two Of Us" Lesbian Movie Review(1975)

4.75 Stars

This movie “Just The Two of Us” is a lot like a lesbian Bewitched setting, with the shag carpets and the go-go dancers. Just how I imagined a lesbian relationship might start in the 70’s. Two housewives with husbands (in the beginning)

The Era - I guess we can’t expect too much out of a movie that was filmed in the 70’s. The relationship starts with two women who are married, and their husbands are away for work for what seems like weeks at a time. And these two women find comfort in one another. Then of course (as always seems to happen) is that one of the women falls in love, and the other was just passing the time.

Moral Dilemma (Morality silly word) - The problem I have with this movie is the cheating aspect. The thought that it is somehow ok to cheat on someone you are married too. Cheating is Cheating, despite if you cheat on a man with a woman or not. It is still cheating. In one point in the movie, the woman who is not so into the Lesbian relationship starts to cheat on her husband yet again with another man. And her husband comes home unexpectedly to find her with this man. Expectedly the husband is pissed, I wonder what his reaction would have been if he found out that his wife was also cheating with a woman.

Film Quality – This is a movie from the 70’s, so I think my expectation of the film quality was lowered, and so I found it to be rather refreshing. It was a lot like watching any movie from that time period unlike now days when you watch a lesbian title and you are lucky if you get decent film quality.

Plot and Character Chemistry – The plot was very believable, from the moments of realizations of lesbianism when they saw a lesbian couple out having dinner and the looks they exchanged. It was also relative to true life with the way that both characters dealt with the situation afterward. There is even a scene with 4 women sitting playing cards, and there is some discussion about “Gay People”. Some very real things are said in those moments. Some of the ladies in the card game were ignorant (as many are) about lesbians, and therefore homophobic in their conversation. Apart from the sex scenes the chemistry was believable. The Sex Scenes, however were stiff, and a little too forced. There is one scene between the woman who is not into the relationship and her new cheating partner (a man) where the camera watches them laying side by side for nearly a minute, they aren’t moving and the camera circles them and the man slowly gets on top of the woman. Not the most passionate first happening of having sex with each other.

The Ending – This movie, provides the first lesbians riding into the sunset ending in cinema. Sort of, the scene had a moment of tears and the two lovers are reunited in what is to be assumed the first moments of their loving life together (or at least that is what I want to believe happens) . It is a pretty ground breaking film in many respects.

My Rating – I give this movie a 4.75 I have taken off for the moderately believable sexual chemistry between the characters. I can’t see taking anything off for my moral issues with this film, as morality is in the eye of the beholder, and I think it is just gross to hold others to your moral standing, unless they are your partner, then, then there is some grounds for holding someone up to your moral standing, but since this movie is not my partner, I only care enough about it, to state it, then forget about it. This film was truly a ground breaking film and certainly is a must see for any lesbian. It would be kind of like being an Italian Philadelphian and not watching all the Rocky movies.

"Serving In Silence" Lesbian Movie Review(1995)

Rating: 4.5 Stars

The story starts out simple enough, a mother coming home from being away from her children (one of whom is played by a very young Ryan Reynolds). She surprises them by buying a house (4)near them and announcing that she is going to move!

Exciting enough, then she meets an artist (isn’t that fun), and falls in love, on the beach no less. She comes out of the closet guns blazing and hides it from no one, not her father, not her job (military) nor her kids. WHAT INTEGRITY, wow, when the interviewer (whom is deciding on her security clearance) asks her, she says “I am a lesbian”. And further on in the movie, she says “I am an honest person I do not lie”.

HER RELATIONSHIP – ok, so I have some issues with this part of the script, you never see (6)them kiss, hold hands, or relate to one another in any other way than being really good friends. I wonder why, did the writers want to place focus on the emotional, and non physical connection of these two women, instead of having steamy sex scenes as so many lesbian movies have. But I think that this is serious over kill, I get that they don’t want sex scenes in the movie. But, they don’t even hold hands, have a snuggle session, kiss, I think they might hug but so does every other character in this movie. You can’t tell me that the real woman that this movie is based upon, Margarethe Cammermeyer, never kissed, hugged, snuggled or showed any sort of affections to the woman she has fallen in love with. I would love to know their reasoning if anyone has a clue?

ACTING ABILITIES – How can you not get good acting when the leading lady is Glenn Close (Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer) and Judy Davis (Diane) as her love interest. The scenes were carried out with grace, I am not sure If I saw the chemistry between the two leading ladies (as described above) but the relationship between Col’s with her father and sons was very believable, I wanted to hug them all at several points in the movie!

COMING OUT – This is a super duper coming out movie, this woman comes out in so many (5)ways in an hour and 30 mins. that it will make your head spin. To herself, to her love interest, to her father, to her kids, to the military, to her job, to her friends and to the world! All of which happen on separate occasions (with the exception of the world). The coming out explosion had the potential to be overwhelming, but surprisingly it was done very well, weaved with mundane life experiences and getting to know the characters it wasn’t too much, and very well done!

VIDEO QUALITY – I have such issue, with lesbian films being so poorly done, low budget, bad video quality, and often talentless hacks slamming some misguided plot into a moderately functioning movie. You might say “that is so harsh, its art”, and I say blah blah blah, if I shut off a movie in its completion (or often times before cause I can’t bear to watch it anymore) and think to myself “I could have done that with my pal’s from the softball team and my camcorder.” Then it’s not worth me calling it art, or ever wasting another minute watching it again, even if it does support my community. SORRY SOAP BOX

THIS FILMS VIDEO QUALITY – Was great, didn’t irritate me even for a minute. This I would even say is better than most made for TV movies that are out there (this is a made for TV movie which is now out on DVD). Better than most lifetime movies (which I love).

EMOTIONAL MOMENTS - I love movies that give me a sense of completion, I am sure that the real life events were not as neatly tied up as this movie was, but we got to see the respect that the soldiers that were under her command held for her! And what is better, at the very end they tell you what happened to the Col. in real life, what she is doing now, and how things turned out for her! I LOVE THAT

MY RATING – so in conclusion I give this movie 4.5 stars, I took off .5 stars cause I wanted to see some snuggling, some realistic interaction (not a sex scene) between the Col and Diane!!! But other than that small issue this was a definite watch and an absolute BUY!

Cheers!!!!!

"A Love To Keep" Lesbian Movie Review (2006)

4.5 Stars

Is an epic lesbian love story historically set in Fascist Spain--a period of overt homophobia and social oppression. It is the story of Pilar and Elvira and their love which endures during one of the most turbulent historical periods. The film is based on a true story of what two women went through as Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, grabbed absolute power. The women are teachers in Spain during the final years of Franco's dictatorship. In the beginning they met, became friends, then roommates and ultimately soul mates and lovers.

In Franco's Spain, homosexuality was illegal and because of this they were forced to end their relationship. Pilar's mother institutionalizes her when she discovers that her daughter is a lesbian even though her husband objects. In fact, the mother tells the doctor to do whatever he can to cure her of her feelings for women Elvira searches for Pilar and writes letters to every asylum in Spain and pleads with Pilar's parents to tell her where her lover is but gets no help.

Ultimately she finds the hospital on her own but she is not allowed to enter and this incident almost destroys her. Elvira manages to pull herself together and continues to teach but cries and pines for her lover. Pilar, on the other hand, is suffering greatly. She is forced into behavior modification as well as being isolated as part of her therapy. The treatment drains her of feelings and her own will and she suffers relentlessly. When she finally convinces her doctor that she no longer is attracted to women is she finally released and given over to the custody of her parents. They severely restrict her activities and she is no more than a sad shadow of her former self. Elvira shows up at Pilar's parent's house quite unexpectedly and Pilar's mother sends her away but all is not lost.

Pilar's father sees the broken Elvira and he refuses to allow any more injustice to continue. He secretly gives Pilar some money and shows her how to escape and thereby find the happiness that she should have. Pilar finds Elvira and they revel in their love quite openly and they both realize that times have changed for the better. Unfortunately, however, the years of mistreatment and torture have taken their toll on the women--both mentally and physically. Even though the two are very much in love, the ordeals they have been through do not leave them and their bond is tested. The cast is absolutely wonderful. Carmen Elias is Pilar and Susi Sanchez is Elvira and they are very, very convincing as the two women who pay a very high price for love.

The cinematography is beautiful and the music is sublime. The extras on the DVD include a featurette on the making of the film as well as cast interviews. "A Love to Keep" is not an easy movie to watch. I found it reminded me of the period when being gay or lesbian was regarded as having a mental illness. Nevertheless this is an important film as it documents feelings and Franco's intolerance in Spain.

"A Family Affair" Lesbian Movie Review (2003)

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Ok, so it starts off intriguing enough and there are moments when i think i might just like this movie. Although Helen Lesniak is a hard read for a romantic lead, I think that there are many women in my life that come off like that. You know the girls who just seem like they are never going to have a relationship, the ones that annoy the piss out of you because they have their life all organized, and are hard to pull from their daily routine. I fear becoming that girl. So she is moderately unbelievable as a lead romantic character, but then who in this world isn't so I find it kind of refreshing to see a lead romantic character who isn't as hot as a bomb fire at a homecoming celebration (little reference to my southern upbringing).

The mom, who wouldn't love to have a overbearing mom like that, This coming from a homophobic mother whom I haven't talked to in over 10 years. I thought it was absolutely adorable her setting her daughter up. She even joins the local PFLAG, how cute is that! On to the Love interest, wow, ok now this is where it becomes unbelievable how in the heck is a woman like that (humorous as she may be) going to land a hottie like Eric Shaffer. This is where the plot becomes a little far fetched. But of couse, sometimes in life I think now how they hell did she end up with her, she fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Right. You can feel where I am coming from..... I know, not nice..... but then this is a review and not a tralala lets be nice to peoples who suffer from an appearance defisit disorder.... Im nice to those people to their face..... LOL that was mean......

All in all, this is a good movie definitly worth the rent, not so much for the buy unless you are just building your lesbian film collection (which is a fun thing to do). I took 1 point off of a 5 point scale for film quality and .5 point off for the skatter brained plot which can be hard to follow if you are three sheets to the wind and have to close one eye to focus on the screen! Which tends to be how I like to watch movies.

"Gray Matters" Lesbian Movie Review (2006)

Heather Graham, Bridget Moynahan, Thomas Cavanagh, Molly Shannon, Rachel Shelley, Bill Mondy, Gray and Sam are brother and sister and best friends, flatmates in New York City, where she creates ad campaigns and he's a surgery intern. Guess who is in this flick and looking so HOT Rachel Shelley.

Their social life is too insular, so they head to a dog park so Sam can, maybe, meet a woman. He does - Charlie - a zoologist new in the city; he likes her immediately, and the feeling seems mutual. As the three of them spend time together, what if Gray's feelings for Charlie aren't just sisterly? This is where thing get nice and good, on the wedding night. The Bachlorette party, we you will have to see for your self. Not only might this explain her solitary life, but it could lead to real dilemmas (you silly Lesbian) - with Charlie (who's sweet, but a bit opaque) and with Sam. No advice comes from Gray's therapist, but a co-worker and a cab driver give theirs. Can Gray sort things out? One thing is for Damn sure WELCOME to the club you hotty. That is one gal we can all say thank the lord for getting off the fence and coming out/ over to our side.

Hannah Free – Film Festival Obligations/ ScreeningsOfficial Website

If you are in for a tear jerker you are going to LOVE this movie. It will have you empathizing, laughing, crying and wanting to sit down with her, grab a cup of Joe and hear all about the stories from the past.

Synopsis - Hannah and Rachel grew up as little girls in the same small Midwest town, where traditional gender expectations eventually challenge their deep love for one another. Hannah becomes an adventurous, unapologetic lesbian and Rachel a strong but quiet homemaker. Weaving back and forth between past and present, the film reveals how the women maintained their love affair despite a marriage, a world war, infidelities, and family denial. Hannah Free is a feature-length motion picture shot in HD for distribution in worldwide theatrical and ancillary markets.

IF YOU DON’T WANT A SPOILER DON’T READ BELOW

Set the Stage - Hannah is a woman, who has found herself in a nursing home. I don’t want to give too much away. But her partner for 40+ years is in the same home only down the hall. Her partner’s family will not allow Hanna to see her partner.

This story was well timed from beginning to end. You find yourself wanting to know more about each character. You are brought threw a journey with this lesbian couple as they grow up together find themselves with one another, and struggle through the wonder lust and the desire to hold on to a love that is so real.

Break my heart, and finding hope within a seemingly hopeless plight. Hannah finds help in a young woman who seems to just be in the home to visit old folks. But threw the movie a twist unveils itself and only adds to an already compelling story.

THE END – is one that you will not soon forget. It is timeless and this is where all of the tears are going to flow, with a mixture of tears and a surprising joy.

The Characters – are well casted and you believe every minute, movies are something that I watch to take myself into a situation and in order for me to LOVE it I have to believe it. The parts are so well performed that you find yourself lost for the duration of the movie. When the lights came on I didn’t want the movie to end.

The Film Quality – If you have read any of my other reviews you will find that one of my biggest pet peeves about a movie is when the film quality takes away from a film. This film is well made and seamlessly edited so if you are into crappy film quality movies, do not look here.

In closing – If you get a chance to catch this film at many of its film festival obligations this 2009 / 2010 season, you should be the first in line. If you read this review after it has excited Film Festivals then rent it buy it, you are going to love it. (But make sure you have some tissue handy you are going to need it)

Cheers......
